Lower Saxony’s largest on-going coastal protection project
Project data
Project | Construction of a new canal lock |
Completion | 2018-2022 |
Location | Ottendorf in Lower Saxony |
Purpose | The old Hadelner Canal lock is replaced by a new, modern and larger structure with the aim of improving coastal protection, land drainage and passage for shipping. |
Formwork systems | NOEtop XXL formwork 5.30 x 2.65 m with elements larger than 14 m² panel area |
Special features | The dyke system must be kept intact during the construction phase. This requirement affects the logistics, which must be coordinated with a construction schedule for working only during the summer months across the whole site. During periods of stormy weather in the winter, work can progress only in the inner, landward regions of the site. Hot-dip galvanised formwork elements are resistant to corrosion, which is a great advantage when building in sea air conditions. The concrete mix and placing techniques must consider aspects such as frost, de-icing salt, seawater and continuously changing water levels. |
